As we celebrate the 4th of July, Pastor Brent encourages us to proclaim the good news as well as follow George Washington’s example to transform our minds, work for the Lord and cleanse our hearts.

Proclaim Liberty

The famous Liberty Bell proclaimed declaration of independence from England.  After this powerful moment, the Liberty Bell was hidden in a wagon covered with manure and straw.  Later the bell was hidden under the floorboards of a church for several years.  There is a powerful verse engraved on the bell:

“Proclaim liberty throughout the land.”  Leviticus 25:10

As Christians, we need to make sure that we are proclaiming the independence we have through Jesus Christ! We have been freed from the strong hold of sin and those in our lives need to hear this life changing message.

Put Things in Proper Order

George Washington was in uncharted territory leading this brand new country.  We get a glimpse of how he was able to do this through a prayer he prayed on a regular basis:

Direct my thoughts, words and work. Wash away my sins in the immaculate blood of the lamb, and purge my heart by thy Holy Spirit, from the dross of my natural corruption, that I may with more freedom of mind and liberty of will serve thee, the ever lasting God, in righteousness and holiness this day, and all the days of my life.

Renew your Mind

Washington knew how powerful the right thoughts were! Romans 12:2 instructs us to “be transformed by the renewing of our mind.”  We do so by focusing on things that are true, noble, right, lovely, admirable, excellent and praise worthy (Philippians 4:8).  We need to make sure we are focusing on these things instead of our problems.

Work for the Lord

Washington worked for the Lord, not himself. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”  Colossians 3:23  Washington had a tough job before him….he was outgunned, out manned and only 1/3 of the nation supported independence.  He relied on to give him strength he could only receive from God.

Cleanse your Heart

After the Liberty Bell came out of hiding, it was cleaned up!  It was not left covered with manure and straw!

Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.  2 Timothy 2:21

Washington had a big, and seemingly impossible job before him, but God prepared him for it. We need to confess our sins before the Lord, so we can be pure and holy before Him.
