In today’s message, Neal Jameson unpacks the account of David and Goliath. He encourages us to deal with the giants in our own lives, so that we can live in the “land of milk and honey” that God has waiting for us.
Despite all odds being stacked against him, David was confident as he prepared to fight the giant Goliath. After being taunted by Goliath, David replied:
“You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” 1 Sam. 17:45-47
He knew the victory would be his because of the Lord.
We Need to Fight the Giants in Our Lives
We all have “giants” in our lives. They may be addictions, fears, challenges, relationships or struggling marriages. As outlined in the book of Samuel, we see that God does not like His people being oppressed and He WILL go to battle on our behalf! It is time for us to face the Philistines in our lives!
Know that Victory Comes Through Jesus
When Jesus entered a new town, he always did three things:
- Preached the Word
- Healed the sick
- Delivered people from bondage
He is still in the business of healing and delivering! Some of the burdens we are carrying are because we haven’t handed them over to God.
Live in the Land of Milk and Honey
When the Israelites reached their promised land of Canaan, Moses sent out spies to see what the land was like. The spies reported that the land was filled with milk and honey and the most amazing fruit (Numbers 13:27). All but two of the spies were afraid to take the land, but Caleb responded:
“We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” Numbers 13:30
Caleb knew that victory would be theirs through God alone. God has a land of milk and honey waiting for us…we need to take it!
