Buffalo Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest during last Monday’s game against the Bengals. The game immediately stopped, the players started praying and eventually the game was called off. The life of Damar Hamlin was more important than the game, the fans and the money that football games generate. This is a great reminder to make we sure are putting the most important thing first in our lives, our relationship with Jesus.
Seek God First
One day Jesus, along with his disciples, went to the home of Martha and Mary. Martha had a strong work ethic, which is a good thing. However, she was getting upset because her sister Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet instead of helping with the practical elements of hospitality.
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42
Mary had chosen the BEST and most IMPORTANT thing… knowing Jesus. It is easy to be involved in good things, but we must make sure our relationship with God takes precedence over all the “good” things in our lives.
Set Spiritual Goals
People who set goals are proven to be more successful than those that don’t. What are your goals? Do they focus on having more money, a bigger house, being in better shape? Are they goals that are drawing you nearer to Christ?
“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Phil 3:14
Take time to examine your goals. Ask yourself what type of legacy you want to leave.
Love God’s People
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” Mt 22:37-39
The second priority in our lives should be to love people. When we put God first in our lives, we will be able to love others with the love of Christ.
